Learning a foreign language is a lifelong investment. It is a complex process that requires time and dedication to be successful, and it should occur in a similar way to the acquisition of the mother tongue.
Stephen Krashen (1997) makes a relevant distinction between 'natural assimilation' and 'formal study'. 'Language Acquisition' occurs in communicative situations in the real world, through the natural assimilation of vocabulary and linguistic structures by the learner. Language Learning occurs through formal study, usually in the classroom. Assimilating a foreign language presupposes the development of the four communicative skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - in real situations of communication, fruit of human conviviality in environments that are authentic to those of foreign culture. Therefore, the objective of immersion courses is to promote the exposure of learners to the target language in social contexts where they can make the natural assimilation of the language.
